Remembrance is an important day here at Hollis Academy. Our school is named after Stanley Hollis - a Middlesbrough born hero who was awarded the Victoria Cross on D-Day in World War 2. Stanley was an average sort of a man; he was a lorry driver and had a wife and kids. He signed up to the army at the start of the war in 1939 and did his part. Stanley Hollis shows us that the average man has a hero inside of them. During the terrifying D-day landings, he escaped danger coming out from behind enemy lines, but then ran back into it to rescue 2 of his unit. Stanley Hollis embodies our Academy values of courage, determination and selflessness. We all have a hero inside us.
Today we have visited the cenotaph and spent all morning joining together to remember soldiers that fight to protect us today and fought to protect us in the past.
