Students from PLC, Stanley, Elton and Yr 7 accessed the National Literacy Trust live online author event with author A F Steadman - writer of the Skandar series which is a fantasy fiction series about unicorn riders, bloodthirsty unicorns danger and magic. She spoke to us about how she writes her books, creates characters, where she writes and how she became a writer. We got to input ideas to create our own unicorn character following her prompts. Students really enjoyed the event

Afterwards we did our own writing about unicorns, all students received a book from the Skandar series and a certificate for taking part.

1 in 12 children and young people in the UK aged 5 to 18 say they do not have a book of their own at home. Reading is linked to improved outcomes for children in all measures so we will continue to work hard on supporting young people to read more.
