Aims of the PE department

Hollis Academy's PE department aims to promote enjoyment and a sense of achievement at every level of sport, developing pupil's social and interpersonal skills. Students will working with others and understand how to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. We will ensure students have the knowledge, skills and confidence to continue in their leisure time and encourage them to participate in extra-curricular activities, hopefully developing a lifelong interest in maintaining a healthy and physically active lifestyle.



Key Stage 3

Year 7 Sports

  • Fundamental Movement Skills  – Developing the application of fundamentals of movement into sports.
  • Net and Wall – Students will study badminton, table tennis and volleyball. 
  • Invasion Games – Students will study rugby, football, dodgeball and basketball.
  • Fitness and Health – Looking at how to live a healthy and active lifestyle.
  • Athletics – Students will study track and field events.

Year 8 Sports

  • Net and Wall – Students will study badminton, table tennis and volleyball. 
  • Invasion Games – Students will study rugby, football, dodgeball and basketball.
  • Fitness and Health – Looking at how to live a healthy and active lifestyle.
  • Athletics –  Students will study track and field events.
  • Gymnastics – Students will develop physical competency in a range of creative movements.

Year 9 Sports

  • Net and Wall – Students will study badminton, table tennis and volleyball. 
  • Invasion Games – Students will study rugby, football, dodgeball and basketball.
  • Fitness and Health – Looking at how to live a healthy and active lifestyle.
  • Gymnastics – Students will develop physical competency in an range of creative movements.
  • Outdoor and Adventurous Activities – Students will study a range of outdoor activities including climbing, kayaking/ canoeing and orienteering.

Key Stage 4

GCSE PE

Students who choose GCSE PE will have elements of practical assessment (60%) and an exam (40%). Students will continue to build practical skills, knowledge and tactics from key stage 3 across a range of sports. They will combine this with theoretical understanding of sports.

Year 10

  • The range of physical activities & roles.
  • The demands of the performer.
  • Aerobic & anaerobic exercise.
  • Linking physical activity with diet, work and rest for personal health and a balanced lifestyle.
  • Aspects of training and exercise.

Year 11

  • School influences on sport.
  • Emotional health and well being.
  • Cultural and social factors affecting sport.
  • Opportunities and pathways available for becoming or remaining in physical activity.
  • How the media affects sport.
  • Sponsorship.
  • Making informed decisions, getting involved.

Core PE

Students who choose Core PE will participate in the subject once a week. During year 10 and 11 students will study and undertake Sports Leaders Level 1. This will develop their leadership, communication and social skills linked to sport. These sessions are 90% practical and assessment is ongoing through the course.
