Relationships and sex education (RSE) is delivered through our personal development curriculum and the PSHCE curriculum. Our intent is to deliver an RSE curriculum that is tailored to the unique needs and challenges of our SEMH students, empowering them with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to navigate the complex terrain of relationships, sexuality, and personal well-being. Children have 1 or 2 PSHCE lessons per week depending on age group.
RSE is delivered through the PSHCE strands:
- Self-care, Support and Safety (Looking after myself and keeping safe; aspects of Relationships and Sex Education.) - Term 1A
- Managing Feelings (Understanding feelings, and that how I feel and how others feel affects choices and behaviour; aspects of Relationships and Sex Education) - Term 3B
- Changing and Growing (How I and others are changing; new opportunities and responsibilities; aspects of Relationships and Sex Education) - Term 2A
Each area is delivered each year with a gradient of understanding for each.
We work using the PSHCE association guidance to ensure children make the best progress. Year 7 and 8 children will work on encountering to development stages, and Year 9 onwards will usually work at enrichment and enhancement. The curriculum is flexible to ensure we meet each child's starting point.
Please see this document for the elements of our curriculum specially around RSE. (link it here)
Throughout the year Hollis Academy staff work with Brook sexual health and Barnado's to ensure professionals are to hand to support workshops exploring feelings and misconceptions.
